Welcome! to our PNG Travel tips
PERSONAL SECURITY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!
Personal safety and security are important considerations for any traveller / resident / visitor. Upon your arrival to PNG, you should be aware that public safety problems in Port Moresby and other urban centres such as Lae and Mt Hagen are of concern.
The following basic security guide should ensure that your stay is trouble-free:
+ Personal safety and security starts with taking responsibility.
+ Practice "situation awareness" at all times, by being consciously aware of your surroundings, look for irregularities, listen to your intuition, be prepared to avert dangerous situations
+ Always carry a form of communication (Radio / Mobile phone) ensure emergency numbers are PRE- programmed in. Test equipment regularly to make sure it works.
+ Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to arrive at your destination, let people know if your plans change or that you will be late
+ Ensure your vehicle is in good working order and has current registration and road worthy certificate clearly displayed and ALWAYS carry your drivers license on your person (it is a legal requirement)
+ External doors of your residence / hotel room should be locked at all times whether you are home or not. Do not open the door unless you have positively identified who is on the other side.
+ Criminals are known to carry out surveillance outside clubs and restaurants with the objective of following patrons to their place of residence. If being followed keep driving until you have lost them, or drive to SECURITYPlus compound where we will escort you home.
+ Refuse politely all requests for loans, handouts or offers of transport
+ Women should dress conservatively to avoid attracting attention. Pack rape is an unfortunate common occurrence.
+ Avoid walking alone and women should not drive alone at night
+ Opportunistic crime is the norm, do all that you can to avoid being victimised. Unless it is a Police roadblock DO NOT STOP YOUR VEHICLE FOR ANY REASON. You are safer inside your vehicle if weapons are being brandished.
+ Only drink alcohol at larger international standard clubs, hotels, restaurants. Never drink and drive as you need to be fully aware of your actions and surroundings.
+ Do not openly carry a wallet or handbag (women are encouraged to carry the handbag strap across the chest). Only carry a small amount of money, ATM access is available at most establishments.
+ Be very aware of HIV (Prostitutes have a disproportionately high percentage of HIV and other STD's)
+ Leave all valuables in Hotel safes
+ Take photocopies / ecopies of all travel documents (passports, travel itinerary) and hand them to a
responsible person prior to leaving home Country.
+ Use discretion when sharing your views and opinions in public especially on subjects relating to PNG
+ Tipping is not compulsory
+ Know how to contact SECURITY+ in times of need
+ PMV bus drivers are notorious for their erratic driving habits, pedestrians walk on roadways and are aloof and disregard traffic signalling and markings
+ Whilst traffic regulations do exist, they are poorly enforced, given rise for a greater need for driving with caution and anticipation. Drive on the left side of the road.
+ Get into good habits - keep car doors locked, and windows up and wear safety belts
